Nepal has been endowed with enormous hydropower potential due to numerous rivers and favorable topographical features. The total hydropower potential has been estimated to be 83,000MW of which 43,000MW has been assessed to be techno-economically feasible.
Hydropower development remained a state responsibility in Nepal for a long time. Hydropower Development Policy, 1992, Electricity Act, 1992 and Water Resources Act, 1992 opened the door for investment in hydropower development by private sectors. Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Bank of Nepal) has categorized hydropower projects as one of the priority sectors for investment. Nepali banks and financial institutions have also shown interest to provide loans in this sector. Therefore, it is an emerging sector in the country. Access to electricity is one of the pre-requisite basic conditions for economic development of any society. Electricity will not only increase the quality of lives but also support the livelihood of people, thus contributing to poverty alleviation and economic development of the society. Moreover, in case there is a surplus or shortage of electricity, there is a scope for trading the energy with neighboring countries. Peace Energy Company Pvt Ltd (PEC) was established in 2072 B.S for grabbing investment opportunities in hydropower sector by the private sector with a view of contribution towards the economic development of Nepal. Peace Energy Company Pvt Ltd was established to develop hydropower projects that are managed by the team of diversified well experienced professionals, local and successful businessmen from various disciplines such as hydropower, management, consultants, engineering, health, education, and public affairs committed to bring excellence in the corporate and public governance. The sole purpose PEC of generating energy in safe, cost effective, reliable, efficient and environmentally sound manner using state of the art technologies. The institution aims to generate and supply energy from various sources, mainly by hydropower. In order to pursue this goal, the Company envisage to organize and utilize the financial and technical capabilities available within the country and abroad to construct projects one after another to contribute to whatever extent possible to the energy need of nation, and assure attractive return to the investors.The company’s core business is the hydropower development, managing comprehensive study of determining the technical viability as well as financial attractiveness of the projects. The PEC has also accomplished the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), for obtaining the generation license from the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Energy, Department of Electricity Development (DoED) and subsequently for funding arrangement of the projects.
